Getting Better? Speed & Power Testing

New Athlete App now includes follow along workouts & body part tutorials along with speed and power testing.

You sign Messi to your team.

It’s pre-season and the team is testing speed and jumps.

How much does the coach care about Messi’s scores?

Not much.

Same for Tom Brady.

Why?

Because they have so much skill and game awareness that it doesn’t matter.

Skill is what makes the greatest the greatest.

Why is this?

It’s because skill is more trainable.

Let me make this clearer with an example.

In junior Rugby or American Football the players who mature early dominate.

From 10-15 there are early bloomers who destroy the opposition with their size, strength & speed.

Very rarely do these players ever make it to the top.

Why?

Their outlier physicality decreases their skill development.

It was the same for a long time with the local tall athlete in Basketball.

They were the tallest so they played with their back to the basket and shot from close to the ring.

The problem is when they “only” end up being 6’6” or 6’8” they were too short to play that role in the top leagues.

They never got the chance to develop the skills they needed to play on the outside.

The higher skilled the sport the clearer it is that physicality isn’t going to make the greatest.

Golf? You’d have to be hitting the ball 100 yards further off the tee because so much of the game is about what happens next.

Tennis? The players with the biggest serves and hardest ground strokes are rarely the best.

Skills can be improved much further.

Skills make the outliers.

Most average athletes undervalue the skills opportunity.

Primary Skills & Secret skills aren’t yet mainstream athletes concepts.

Many athletes go through their entire careers with massive unaddressed foundational gaps.

We rightly test speed and power.

We miss balance, balls & / or beats too often.

Secret skills are even more rare to see discussed.

The most undervalued aspect of athletic development is skill.

Most athletic joy comes through the expression of skills.

If you’d like to improve so fast that you even shock yourself apply New Athlete Method.
